Information about Palermo

Palermo is a city with much to offer: beautiful churches, historic markets, hidden oratories, noble palaces, and charming squares. A multi-ethnic city that amazes with its millenia-long history, told through a myriad of monuments, making this city a captivating mosaic of architectural styles. Founded by the Phoenicians in the 8th century BC, it becomes a significant capital during the Muslim domination of Sicily. Its golden age arrives with the Normans, enlightened rulers and founders of the Kingdom of Sicily. They transform Palermo into a multi-ethnic capital, fostering religious tolerance and inspiring an eclectic art style known as Arab-Norman or Sicilian-Norman, designed as UNESCO heritage since 2015. Another crucial period for the city is the Baroque era, during which Palermo gives birth to original, valuable and, above all, astonishing artistic expressions. Among the most significant architectural styles, there is also the Art Nouveau style. Palermo is also the “capital” of street food, especially to be experienced in the historic markets of the city. These markets have retained their almost unaltered charm until today, with their lively and colorful atmosphere.
